How long-term gum disease can impact your general health

Did you know that a huge 90% of people in the UK will suffer from some form of gum disease in their lifetime?

Here at EvoDental, we understand how isolating periodontitis can be, especially if it’s in its more advanced stages – but the truth is you’re not as alone as you think. From mild gingivitis to full blown gum disease that leads to severe tooth loss – it is a condition that affects most of us at some point.

But could gum disease be doing more harm than you realise? One of the most surprising things about gum disease is that it can impact more than just our oral health if left to become worse – and today, we’re going to be taking a look at those other health implications.

If you’ve been putting off getting treatment for your gum disease – this one is for you. . .

If we had to have just one job here at EvoDental – it would be to give our patients the knowledge to become confident in taking control of their own health. A huge percentage of the patients we treat come to us when their gum disease has become well advanced, with many saying they felt too ashamed, embarrassed or fearful of seeking treatment sooner.

But, besides the huge impact on your oral health, established gum disease that is left untreated can eventually lead to other health conditions too.

In fact, studies have shown that there is a link between gum disease and other conditions including:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Pneumonia
  • Dementia

Significantly, it has been shown that the bacteria in plaque which causes our gums to become inflamed is the same bacteria shown to inflame the tissues in the heart. This occurs when said bacteria (from plaque) gets into the bloodstream, causing those vital tissues to become irritated and damaged (similarly to the way our gums do!).

Whilst we appreciate that this all sounds quite daunting and scary – it’s not all bad news!

Advanced gum disease isn’t the end of the road. . .

Whilst early signs of gum disease are treatable, if you haven’t been able to prevent it from advancing – there are still options available.

Here at EvoDental, treating advanced gum disease is what we do. In fact, it is all that we do here, and our specialist team have been engineering The EvoSolution in our in-house lab since 2007.
